In the first few months the British suffered many reverses. Patriotism ran high in these days of Empire, and Queen Victoria sent consignments of chocolate to the troops wishing them a Happy New Year for January 1st, The Boers gave the area the name of Suffolk Hill in recognition of their courage. They left for South Africa on February 11th. They joined the Suffolk Regiment at Middleburg. In , Suffolk was still a deeply rural county.
